Return Rubik's Cube-Style Storage Table: How to create an original piece of furniture with spray paint and professional varnish
Did you know that Ernő Rubik, the creator of the famous cube, took weeks to solve his own invention for the first time? We can’t claim to be Rubik’s Cube masters either, but one thing is certain: this legendary toy has become a true pop culture icon and an endless source of inspiration for design.
Inspired by its shape, colors, and playful spirit, we created a Rubik’s Cube–style storage table, a functional and decorative piece of furniture where color plays a leading role. And that is precisely why spray paint and varnish have been essential tools throughout the entire process.
Below, we explain how we made it and why WEPRO spray products were key to achieving a clean, durable, professional finish.
Shape and Use: A Versatile Piece with Iconic Design
The large‑scale cubic shape is transformed into a multi‑purpose piece of furniture. This storage table can be used as:
- a side table
- a stool
- a decorative statement piece
- a storage solution for everyday items
The design combines functionality and visual impact. The hollow interior maximizes storage space, while the exterior faithfully recreates the instantly recognizable look of a Rubik’s Cube, with its grid of colorful squares.
This project fits perfectly within the oversize design trend, widely used in contemporary interior design, where everyday objects are reimagined at a larger scale to become focal points in a space.
Materials Needed
Structure and Assembly
To build the main body, you will need six wooden boards, calculated using two key measurements:
- L: the length of one side of the cube
- e: the thickness of the boards
Required pieces:
- 1 board measuring L × L
- 2 boards measuring L × (L − e)
- 2 boards measuring (L − 2e) × (L − e)
- 1 board measuring (L − 2e) × (L − 2e)
Additionally:
- At least 6 metal corner brackets
- 2 magnetic catches
- 53 wooden slats measuring (L / 3) − 1 cm
- Wood glue
- Rubber tape
WEPRO Spray Paint: Color, Precision, and Finish
In a project where color is so important, choosing the right paint is essential. To achieve a smooth, even, and long‑lasting result, we used WEPRO Water‑Based Paint, ideal for painting wooden furniture.

Primer
Before applying color, we used WEPRO White Primer, an essential step to:
- improve adhesion
- even out the surface
- enhance color intensity

Colors Used
To recreate the classic Rubik’s Cube look, the following WEPRO Water-Based Paint were used:
- Samba Yellow
- Phoenix Orange
- Scarlet Red
- Surf Blue
- Fiona Green
- Cosmos Black
- Stellar White
Spray paint allows for thin coats, fast drying times, and a flawless finish without brush marks—especially important in geometric designs where crisp lines are key.

Spray Varnish: Protection and Durability
Once the color was finished, the final step was protecting the piece with WEPRO 2K Varnish, a high‑resistance spray varnish designed for furniture that sees everyday use.
This varnish provides:
- protection against knocks and scratches
- moisture resistance
- long‑lasting color durability
- a smooth, even finish with no need for extra retouching
The result is a sturdy, easy‑to‑clean piece of furniture suitable for living rooms, studios, or creative spaces.

A DIY Project Where Paint Makes the Difference
This Rubik’s Cube–style storage table proves that, with good design and the right spray paints, it is possible to create original, professional‑quality furniture without industrial manufacturing processes.
Spray paint and varnish don’t just add color and protection—they are creative tools that turn ideas into unique objects. If you’re planning your next DIY project, remember: starting with the right paint is already solving the first side of the cube.
